AddUp Launches MASSIF Consortium for Advanced Metal 3D Printing

New Initiative for Large-Format Metal Printing
AddUp has announced the formation of a consortium named MASSIF (Metal Additive System, Sustainable, Industrial, EcoFriendly) aimed at spearheading advancements in large-format metal powder bed fusion technology. This initiative seeks to usher in a new era of industrial and technological innovation, focusing on metal 3D printing systems capable of achieving build volumes up to 1.5 x 1.5 x 2 meters.

Collaboration with Key Industry Partners
The initial prototype developed through this consortium will feature a build volume of 750 x 750 x 1000 mm. AddUp has partnered with notable organizations including Cailabs, CETIM, Dassault Systèmes, ISP Systems, and Vistory to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and align with sustainability objectives. The MASSIF machines will leverage the established foundation of AddUp’s FormUp 350 system, already in use for producing various components, from medical implants to aerospace parts.

Ambitious Goals for Productivity and Sustainability
According to AddUp, the new MASSIF machines aim to boost productivity by 300%, cut part costs by 50-70%, and minimize powder waste to below 10%. These machines will be capable of manufacturing parts 12 times larger than those produced by current AddUp systems and will also focus on achieving superior surface finishes. Advanced in-process monitoring will ensure the accuracy and quality of the printed parts, with a commitment to utilizing decarbonated energy in the production process.

Expertise and Innovation at the Forefront
As the consortium leader, AddUp will be responsible for designing and prototyping the new machine, integrating technological advancements and quality monitoring systems. Cailabs and ISP Systems will contribute their expertise in laser beam shaping to enhance print speed and quality. Dassault Systèmes will utilize its 3DEXPERIENCE platform to create virtual models for simulations, while Vistory will focus on securing manufacturing data. CETIM will validate manufacturing parameters and produce initial demonstration parts for various markets.

Strategic Vision for Industry Challenges
AddUp CEO Julien Marcilly emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “It was the association of the best experts that allowed us to launch the MASSIF project.” This initiative aims to provide technological leadership in large-scale metal 3D printing, addressing critical challenges related to energy transition and productivity in sectors such as aeronautics, defense, and space.
