The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) presented its prestigious Automotive Excellence Award to three key collaborators: the Auto/Steel Partnership (A/SP), General Motors, and the University of Waterloo. This recognition highlights their groundbreaking work in advanced simulation methods designed to improve weld integrity in automotive structures. The award ceremony took place at the 23rd annual Great Designs in Steel symposium. The event was held on May 21, 2024, in Novi, Michigan.
Advanced Simulation Methods Lead to Enhanced Vehicle Design
The project that earned this honor, titled “Advanced Industrial Simulation Method for Spot Weld Separation Validated with Components,” introduced a cutting-edge methodology to predict weld performance under complex loading conditions. A team of nine professionals from the A/SP, General Motors, and the University of Waterloo conducted this collaborative research. They focused on improving resistance spot weld simulations. Their findings aim to increase the use of advanced high-strength steel in automotive manufacturing.
The team’s innovative approach integrates both standard and advanced steel coupon tests. These tests measure the mechanical properties of single-spot welds. They use the data to create a failure surface model that predicts weld separation. These “material cards” now integrate into finite element simulations. As a result, engineers can make more accurate predictions of the structural performance of welded components. This advanced simulation method is set to improve the design and safety of future vehicles.
