Alberta Expands Battery Recycling with Call2Recycle Program

Alberta has officially launched the Call2Recycle battery recycling program, marking a major milestone in sustainable waste management. The initiative follows the province’s enrollment in the national Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! campaign just five months ago. Since then, over 2,000 drop-off locations have become available across Alberta, accepting both single-use and rechargeable batteries weighing under 11 pounds (5 kilograms).

This province-wide expansion aims to make battery recycling more accessible to households, businesses, and municipalities. By focusing on safety and convenience, Alberta positions itself as a national leader in battery collection infrastructure. Residents can now visit RecycleYourBatteries.ca
to prepare batteries for drop-off and find nearby locations.

Smart Collection Technology Enhances Calgary–Edmonton Corridor

One of the most innovative aspects of the Call2Recycle battery recycling program is the integration of smart technology in its collection network. Call2Recycle Canada has introduced intelligent bins equipped with sensors that monitor temperature and fill levels. These bins can send alerts when nearing capacity or when unsafe conditions arise—making them the first of their kind in North America.

Alongside the smart bins, a proactive pickup service is now active along the Calgary–Edmonton corridor. This route optimization feature improves collection efficiency by using real-time data, including fill levels and pickup timing. Call2Recycle plans to expand these services to other high-volume regions, reinforcing its commitment to operational excellence and environmental safety.

Joseph Chung, VP of account management at Call2Recycle Canada, emphasized that this approach supports “continuous improvement,” helping make battery recycling both safe and convenient for all Albertans.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Alberta’s implementation of the Call2Recycle battery recycling program showcases a strategic pivot toward tech-enabled sustainability in the battery materials supply chain. With lithium-ion batteries playing a growing role in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and grid storage, efficient end-of-life processing is now mission-critical. By investing in smart infrastructure and proactive logistics, Alberta sets a benchmark for other provinces—and indeed countries—to follow. This move not only diverts hazardous waste but also lays the groundwork for a more circular battery economy in Canada.
