Amazon has announced a major renewable energy initiative with plans to invest in three utility-scale wind farms in Greece. These projects are part of Amazon’s broader effort to meet its carbon-free energy goals and support Greece’s transition to renewable electricity sources. The investment is the company’s largest renewable energy commitment in Greece to date and will play a key role in powering Amazon’s regional operations with clean energy while benefiting the local economy.
Key Projects and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
As part of its global push to expand its renewable energy portfolio, Amazon has signed four Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for three wind energy projects in Greece. The three wind farms include:
- Vermio Wind Farm: Located in Western and Central Macedonia, consisting of Vermio North and Vermio South.
- Mesokorfi Wind Farm: Situated in the Peloponnese region.
- Koukouras Wind Farm: Also located in the Peloponnese.
These wind farms are expected to generate enough carbon-free electricity to power about 200,000 homes annually. Construction has already begun, with power generation anticipated to start in 2026.
Contribution to Greece’s Renewable Energy Goals and Amazon’s Net-Zero Commitment
These projects align with Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan, which aims to generate over 80% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030. By adding carbon-free energy to Greece’s electricity grid, Amazon is helping to accelerate the country’s shift away from fossil fuels, which still account for nearly half of its electricity generation.
For Amazon, these wind farms are part of its Climate Pledge, which commits the company to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The wind farms will contribute to Amazon’s goal of expanding its carbon-free energy usage across the globe, with the company already achieving 100% renewable energy sourcing ahead of its 2030 target.
Economic and Employment Benefits for Greece
The construction and operation of the wind farms are expected to create significant economic opportunities for Greece. Over 100 jobs have already been created for the Vermio wind farm, with the number potentially rising to 300 at the project’s peak. These jobs will support the local economy, furthering Amazon’s commitment to not only sustainability but also to fostering job growth in the regions where it operates.
Developed by Aer Soléir, a Dublin-based company focused on sustainability infrastructure, these projects will provide long-term benefits to the local communities, with the wind farms feeding electricity directly into Greece’s grid. This helps support Amazon’s regional operations and contributes to the overall sustainability of the country’s energy system.
Amazon’s Broader Renewable Energy Efforts
These Greek wind farms are part of Amazon’s extensive global renewable energy portfolio, which includes over 500 solar and wind projects worldwide. The company recently announced it had met its goal to source 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2023, achieving this seven years ahead of schedule.
AWS EMEA Energy Director Lindsay McQuade highlighted the significance of the Greek wind farms, noting that they mark an important milestone in Amazon’s ongoing journey toward a carbon-free energy future. With more than 180 wind and solar projects across Europe, Amazon is committed to driving the renewable energy transition forward and supporting both its operations and local communities.
