Aqua Metals Introduces Nickel Carbonate to Strengthen Battery Materials Portfolio

Aqua Metals, a leader in lithium-ion battery recycling, has introduced high-purity nickel carbonate to its product line. The Nevada-based company developed the material using its patented AquaRefining technology. This innovation supports its goal to supply sustainable and domestic critical minerals.

According to Aqua Metals CEO Steve Cotton, the new product highlights the adaptability of their proprietary process. It also positions the company to respond rapidly to market changes. “By turning byproducts into revenue, we strengthen our U.S.-based clean recycling solutions,” Cotton said.

Nickel carbonate is growing in demand due to its high value in both battery manufacturing and metallurgical uses. It can be refined into pure nickel metal or converted into nickel oxide, a key input for the steel industry. This makes it essential for electric vehicle batteries and industrial processes alike.

Aqua Metals Targets a Diversified U.S. Mineral Supply Chain

The development of battery-grade nickel carbonate aligns with Aqua Metals’ strategy to expand its critical materials offering. The company already produces lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese using its zero-emissions AquaRefining process.

Ben Taecker, Chief Operations and Engineering Officer at Aqua Metals, emphasized the team’s focus on market responsiveness. “We’re optimizing recovery, minimizing waste, and driving clean processing solutions,” Taecker noted. The company also continues to advance offtake agreements and secure project funding for domestic operations.

This nickel carbonate addition signals strong momentum toward building a resilient U.S. supply chain for energy-transition metals. It supports national goals to reduce reliance on imported materials and promote local sourcing.
