Ascend’s Breakthrough in Recycled Lithium Carbonate Production

Ascend Elements, a leading lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycler in Massachusetts, recently announced a historic achievement in the U.S. The company produced over 99% pure recycled lithium carbonate from black mass—battery waste material. This marks a major milestone in domestic critical minerals recovery. The commercial-scale lithium recovery process happened at Ascend’s Covington, Georgia facility. This proves sustainable lithium sourcing is viable in the U.S.

Lithium carbonate is essential for making LIBs, glass, and ceramics. Ascend plans to produce over 15,000 metric tons of recycled lithium carbonate each year in the U.S. and Europe by 2027. This milestone supports global efforts to electrify and reduce reliance on imported critical minerals. Most imports come from South America and China. Ascend’s CEO Linh Austin highlighted the importance of localization and energy independence for the western world with this recycling project.

 

The Impact of Recycled Lithium Carbonate on Critical Minerals Security

Ascend’s recycled lithium carbonate addresses several supply chain challenges faced by the U.S. and Europe. Currently, both regions depend heavily on imports, with 98% of U.S. lithium carbonate sourced from South America. Europe’s supply chain is similarly constrained, relying mostly on South America and China. Ascend’s breakthrough diversifies supply, enhances critical minerals security, and supports electrification trends.

Environmental benefits also stand out. A recent life cycle assessment revealed Ascend’s lithium recovery method generates 86% fewer CO2e emissions and 97% less particulate matter than traditional spodumene mining. Compared to Chilean brine extraction, emissions reduce by 37% CO2e and 81% PM 2.5. Ascend targets nearly 99% reductions in these emissions by 2030, reinforcing sustainability alongside commercial scale production.
