Aurubis and Viscaria Advance Long-Term Concentrate Deal
Aurubis and Viscaria moved to secure a major copper concentrate supply contract that supports Europe’s growing metal demand. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding that outlines a long-term partnership starting in 2028. This Aurubis and Viscaria copper concentrate supply contract aims to anchor stable feedstock flows for Aurubis while supporting Viscaria’s relaunch of its Kiruna copper mine.
The Viscaria project continues to gain traction in northern Sweden. The company plans to restart the historical mine as an underground operation with nearly 1 million tons of contained copper. Meanwhile, Viscaria expects the asset to deliver more than 25,000 tons of copper each year. Its location near Aurubis’ smelters strengthens the strategic value of the partnership and reduces transport emissions.
Supply Contract Supports Europe’s Strategic Metals Agenda
This Aurubis and Viscaria copper concentrate supply contract covers about half of Viscaria’s projected output for the first eight years. As a result, Aurubis gains a reliable European source of high-grade, responsibly sourced copper concentrate. If Viscaria increases its production over time, the two companies plan to adjust contracted volumes through good-faith negotiation.
Viscaria positions itself as a future low-carbon leader in global copper mining. The company holds a long-term Swedish environmental permit and secured 45 megawatts of carbon-neutral electricity to run a fully electrified mine fleet. Additionally, Viscaria inaugurated one of Sweden’s most advanced water treatment plants, which exceeds national and international standards. These ESG initiatives align with Aurubis’ commitments under the Copper Mark framework.
European Metal Security Gains Momentum
Sector analysts note that copper demand for data centers, electrification, and infrastructure will rise sharply. Meanwhile, the European Critical Raw Materials Act encourages domestic projects to reduce reliance on external supply chains. This Aurubis and Viscaria copper concentrate supply contract therefore fits the region’s strategy to secure essential industrial metals. Both companies will now proceed with due diligence as they finalize the agreement.
SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
The partnership between Aurubis and Viscaria signals a decisive shift in Europe’s resource strategy. Copper demand keeps accelerating across electrification, defense, and digital infrastructure. As a result, European smelters now move aggressively to secure low-carbon, high-grade feedstock inside the region. Viscaria’s electrified mine and advanced ESG profile give Aurubis a strategic upstream anchor at a time of tightening global copper markets. We expect more EU-based offtake agreements as companies reposition supply chains for resilience and carbon compliance.
