Republican lawmakers are urging President Biden to intervene in contract negotiations to prevent a looming port strike on October 1st that could disrupt shipping operations along the US Gulf and East Coast.
The potential strike, involving the International Longshoremen’s Association and the US Maritime Alliance, could severely impact 14 key ports, leading to significant delays in containership operations. A letter from 69 Republican Congress members emphasized the “devastating economic consequences” if the strike proceeds.
While the Biden administration has not yet commented, shipping company Maersk warned of mounting delays at vital shipping hubs. However, industries dealing with oil, gas, and bulk commodities like coal and grain are expected to remain unaffected, as their operations are largely conducted at private terminals without unionized labor. Companies like Kinder Morgan have indicated that their operations should not be impacted.
