Blue Moon Metals Acquisition of Apex Mine Strengthens US Critical Minerals
Blue Moon Metals will acquire the Apex Mine in Utah from Teck Resources. The deal expands Blue Moon’s portfolio of critical minerals, including germanium, gallium, and copper, supporting domestic supply chains.
The sale and purchase agreement, signed in February 2026, will complete by March 2026. Blue Moon gains 26 patented and nine unpatented claims covering 250 hectares, while issuing 7,031,959 common shares to Teck, representing 8% of outstanding shares. Teck will receive a 0.5% net smelter return royalty and a capped royalty of $1 million (C$1.37 million).
Immediate synergies include processing zinc concentrates from Blue Moon’s California Mine at Teck Trail Operations. The company also plans to redevelop Apex Mine to secure a domestic germanium and gallium source, aligning with US critical mineral initiatives.
Apex Mine Redevelopment and US Critical Minerals Strategy
Blue Moon will explore technical studies and community engagement to support final investment decisions. The company also considers restarting the Springer tungsten mine in Nevada to expand domestic processing capacity.
The advanced-stage Blue Moon Mine in California has historical mid-20th century production and received permits in April 2025. Construction of an exploration decline began in October 2025, with production targeted for 2028. Materials from this mine could support processing at the Springer metallurgical complex.
CEO Christian Kargl-Simard said, “Combining Apex Mine acquisition, Springer redevelopment, and Teck’s Trail Operations creates a hub-and-spoke platform for US critical metals growth. We will leverage technical expertise and infrastructure to advance copper, zinc, tungsten, germanium, and gallium projects.”
Strategic Impact on US Supply Chains
The Apex Mine acquisition positions Blue Moon as a key player in domestic critical minerals production. The company aims to reduce US dependence on foreign suppliers and secure long-term feedstock for strategic metals, supporting government initiatives to expand critical mineral stockpiles.
SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
Blue Moon’s acquisition of Apex Mine strengthens US resilience in critical minerals, including germanium, gallium, and copper. Combining redevelopment projects with processing capacity at Teck’s Trail Operations enhances domestic supply security. The move could shift North American market dynamics and bolster the US position in global critical metals.
