European Commission’s Urgent Appeal
The European Commission has urged Israel to revoke its recently enacted ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The Commission described the ban as “extremely worrying,” noting it could hinder UNRWA’s operations amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the West Bank, and surrounding regions.
Impact on Humanitarian Aid
The UNRWA provides essential services, including emergency relief, education, and healthcare to millions of Palestinian refugees. A Commission spokesperson emphasized that there is no viable alternative to UNRWA, asserting that the legislation contradicts international law and humanitarian principles.
International Condemnation of the Ban
The Knesset adopted the ban with considerable support, prompting strong criticism from several countries, including Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris labeled the legislation as “disastrous and shameful,” while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned it could undermine international humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
Israeli Government’s Justification
The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has accused UNRWA of complicity in terrorist activities linked to Hamas. Netanyahu’s office stated that individuals within UNRWA engaging in such activities must be held accountable. In response, UNRWA has defended its neutrality and called for evidence to support the accusations, but has received little acknowledgment from Israeli authorities.
Consequences for Palestinian Welfare
Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s commissioner-general, stated that the ban would exacerbate the already dire conditions in Gaza, where civilians have faced prolonged hardship. He condemned the legislation as a form of collective punishment against the Palestinian population.
