Chile Advances Lithium Strategy with Six New Exploration Sites
Chile has launched an ambitious initiative to boost lithium exploration, selecting six priority salt flats—Coipasa, Ollague, Ascotan, Piedra Parada, Agua Amarga, and Laguna Verde. This move strengthens Chile’s global leadership in the lithium market, which is crucial for EV batteries and green technologies.
Indigenous Consultations and Environmental Commitments
Mining Minister Aurora Williams announced that consultations with indigenous communities near the selected sites will begin in October. The process emphasizes transparency and environmental responsibility, ensuring that stakeholders are involved in the decision-making process.
Further Expansion of Lithium Exploration Planned
Later this year, Chile will release a second list of lithium prospects, based on geological and environmental feasibility. So far, 12 project proposals from both private and state-run companies have been submitted. Chile aims to increase lithium production by over 70% by 2030.
Chile Maintains Global Leadership in Lithium Reserves
Chile holds 36–40% of the world’s lithium reserves, giving it a strategic position in the global supply chain. With demand rising rapidly, especially for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, Chile is positioning itself to meet future market needs.
