Chile has made a significant leap in lithium production by selecting six priority exploration sites: Coipasa, Ollague, Ascotan, Piedra Parada, Agua Amarga, and Laguna Verde salt flats. This initiative underscores the country’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in the global lithium market.
Mining Minister Aurora Williams announced that consultations with indigenous communities near these sites will commence in October, emphasizing the importance of involving all stakeholders in decision-making regarding environmental and social impacts.
Additionally, a second list of saline systems and deposits will be revealed later this year, focusing on feasibility, geological factors, and environmental considerations. With 12 project proposals already received from private and state-run companies, Chile aims to boost its lithium production by over 70% by 2030.
Currently, Chile holds an estimated 36-40% of the world’s lithium reserves, positioning itself as a crucial player in meeting the rising demand for lithium in electric vehicle batteries and green technologies.
