Constellium, a global leader in aluminum production and recycling, has maintained its recycled feedstock rate for 2024. The company’s commitment to sustainability and efficient material use continues as it releases its 2024 Sustainability Report, highlighting increased recycling capacity and progress toward its environmental goals.

Increased Recycling Capacity

In 2024, Constellium opened a new $140 million recycled-content aluminum plant in Neuf-Brisach, France. The plant boosts the company’s global recycling capacity to over 750,000 metric tons annually. The new facility enhances Constellium’s ability to recycle automotive and packaging products, further strengthening its closed-loop recycling capabilities.

Jean-Marc Germain, CEO of Constellium, stated, “Aluminum is an extraordinary material. It can be infinitely recycled without losing its properties, making it a key enabler of a low-carbon future.”

Recycled Feedstock Rate Steady at 42%

In the 2024 report, Constellium confirmed its use of recycled aluminum as melt shop feedstock remained steady at 42%. This rate matches that of 2023, indicating consistency in the company’s recycling efforts. However, Constellium is working toward its 50% goal by 2030 to further reduce carbon emissions.

The company operates six melt shops globally, two of which are in the U.S. The Ravenswood, West Virginia facility processes 20,000 metric tons of preconsumer scrap annually. Meanwhile, the Muscle Shoals, Alabama plant is Constellium’s largest recycler, processing 340,000 metric tons, mostly used beverage cans (UBCs).

Collaborative Efforts to Boost UBC Recycling

Constellium is focused on increasing UBC collection rates in the U.S. The company supports the Can Manufacturers Institute’s ambitious goals to increase the UBC recycling rate. CMI aims to raise this rate to 70% by 2030, 80% by 2040, and 90% by 2050.

Together with the Aluminum Association and CMI, Constellium is actively working to introduce new recycling laws at both federal and state levels. These efforts are crucial in driving further progress toward sustainable aluminum recycling.
