Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) announced this week its plan to build 10 pilot reduction cells at its Al Taweelah aluminium smelter, signifying the completion of the design phase for its new EX smelting technology.
The innovative EX cells come in two types: one aimed at maximizing production volumes and the other focused on reducing carbon emissions. These cells are larger than those using EGA’s recently industrialized DX+ Ultra technology, providing greater energy efficiency and increasing production capacity by up to 22%. Moreover, the new technology is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 12% through more efficient anode usage.
“EX technology will enable the production of more aluminium with less energy and lower emissions, unlocking opportunities for EGA’s growth and helping us to meet the increasing global demand for the low-carbon primary aluminium required to reach net zero by 2050,” said Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, EGA’s chief executive.
The pilot reduction cells are scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2025, with EGA aiming for full industrialization of the new technology by 2028.
