Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux Group has set a bold sustainability target. By 2030, the company plans to use 35 percent recycled steel and plastic in its products, significantly increasing its use of Electrolux recycled materials. This goal marks a significant step in its push for a sustainable future. It will nearly double the amount of recycled materials the company currently uses.
Increased Focus on Steel and Plastic in Manufacturing
Electrolux’s new target is a notable expansion, particularly because steel and plastic are among the most commonly used materials in its product manufacturing. According to Electrolux, the inclusion of steel in this target increases the amount of material in scope to over 40 percent of all material purchased by the company. This is approximately three times the amount targeted in the previous commitment.
Elena Breda, Electrolux’s Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer, emphasized the company’s leadership in sustainability, stating, “As a sustainability leader, we will continue to push ourselves and the industry to adopt even bolder sustainability commitments.” Breda expressed pride in setting this goal as an industry-first initiative. The increased use of recycled steel and plastics will play a vital role in advancing the company’s circularity agenda.
Moving Toward a Circular Economy with Recycled Steel and Plastics
By incorporating recycled steel and plastic into its appliances, Electrolux aligns with its broader commitment to a circular economy. This move not only reduces the environmental impact of manufacturing but also helps mitigate the need for virgin materials. The initiative also demonstrates Electrolux’s determination to contribute positively to environmental sustainability by reducing waste and lowering its carbon footprint.
In North America, Electrolux manufactures and markets its products under the well-known Frigidaire and Electrolux brands. The company operates production facilities in Kinston, North Carolina, Anderson, South Carolina, Springfield, Tennessee, and Juárez, Mexico. The company employs about 9,400 people in the region.
This announcement coincides with the release of Electrolux’s 2024 sustainability statement, which outlines the company’s ongoing efforts to improve sustainability across its operations and products.
