Equinor has announced a new oil and gas discovery located 17 kilometers west of the Troll field in the North Sea, with estimated reserves of between 2 and 12 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe). The discovery, known as “Ringand,” includes both oil and gas, but the commercial viability of the find on its own remains uncertain due to its smaller size.
Potential for Future Development
While the discovery itself is modest, Equinor sees significant potential in the area, especially given the proximity to existing infrastructure from the Troll field. The company plans to further explore the region, with the goal of maximizing resource utilization and minimizing development costs. If additional discoveries are made nearby, Equinor suggests that combining them could create a more economically viable development. Geir Sørtveit, Equinor’s Senior Vice President for Exploration & Production West in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), emphasized that further exploration could enhance the project’s economic prospects.
Drilling Operations
The well was drilled by the Deepsea Atlantic drilling rig, and Equinor intends to continue its exploration activities in the area to evaluate the full potential of the reserves. The proximity to the Troll field offers a strategic advantage, potentially allowing for integrated development of the new discovery alongside existing infrastructure, ensuring efficient resource extraction and improved project economics.
