The European Union has submitted a revised trade proposal to the United States, aiming to advance negotiations and foster cooperation on key industrial sectors. This move signals a strategic attempt to resolve trade tensions and enhance bilateral ties, especially concerning metals and raw materials.

Focus on Export Controls and Overcapacity in Steel Industry

The new EU proposal addresses export control collaboration and tackles overcapacity issues in supply chains, including steel, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and semiconductors. The EU seeks mutual solutions to balance supply and demand pressures, particularly in the steel market, where excess capacity has caused global disruptions.

Broader Cooperation in Strategic Sectors and Tariff Reduction

The document also highlights cooperation on investment verification and strategic procurement, focusing on sectors like energy, artificial intelligence, and digital communications. Both parties consider gradual tariff reductions on non-sensitive agricultural and industrial goods to zero, aiming to boost trade volume and economic security.

The European Commission is actively seeking a mandate from member states before launching formal negotiations. Discussions continue, with political-level meetings expected in early June.
