European Parliament Extends Duty-Free Trade for Ukrainian Steel

On May 8, the European Parliament voted in favor of extending the duty-free regime for Ukrainian steel products.
This extension will last until June 2028, providing Ukraine’s steel industry continued access to the European Union market without import duties or quotas.

The preferential trade regime is vital for Ukraine, whose steel industry is a key pillar of the national economy.
Despite the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine’s steel plants continue to operate, with many workers on the front lines defending their country.

EU’s Support for Ukraine’s Steel Industry

The European Parliament’s decision underscores the EU’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s economy during these challenging times.
Karin Karlsbrough, a Swedish Member of the European Parliament (MEP), emphasized that the strengthening of EU-Ukraine trade relations benefits both parties.

The European Commission is working on a long-term solution to stabilize trade relations between the EU and Ukraine.
However, concerns remain about the potential impact of the Comprehensive Bilateral Agreement (CBA), which will take effect in 2026, possibly creating new trade barriers for Ukrainian steel exports.

Andriy Glushchenko, an analyst at GMK Center, pointed out that while the extension is crucial, it may not fully address the challenges posed by regional trade barriers.
Ukraine faces 28 trade restrictions across 13 countries, significantly affecting its steel exports.
