European Stainless Steel Prices Face Continued Pressure Amid Weak Demand
Stainless steel prices in Europe are set to decline through the third quarter of 2025, according to Italian industry association Assofermet.
Alessandro Bettuzzi, Sales Director at Oiki Acciai Spa and Coordinator of Assofermet’s Stainless Steel Division, shared this outlook at the Made in Steel event. He explained that high inventories in European service centers and low demand from key industries, such as automotive and appliances, are driving the downward trend.
Falling Nickel Scrap Prices and Energy Costs Add Pressure
Assofermet also cited falling prices for nickel scrap and declining electricity costs as key factors contributing to the drop in cold-rolled stainless steel prices. These conditions have made European stainless steel more competitive with imports from China and Indonesia.
A representative from Assofermet told Argus Media that, although production costs are easing, high energy prices still pose a challenge for European producers. The association supports long-term investments in renewable energy as a way to reduce operating costs sustainably.
According to market reports, cold-rolled flat stainless steel products have already declined by €100/ton since mid-March. Prices remained stable earlier in the year but have fallen as demand weakens. This trend will likely continue into July, especially in Italy.
Assofermet Calls for EU Support of the Entire Value Chain
Bettuzzi emphasized that the European Union should focus more on protecting downstream players across the steel value chain, not just producers. Earlier, the European Byers Association (EBA) echoed this view, calling on the EU to support trade, distribution, and end-use sectors as well.
Despite challenges, leading European producers such as Acerinox and Outokumpu posted positive Q1 results in 2025. Both reported increased EBITDA and production volumes, signaling operational resilience in a volatile market.
