Ganfeng Lithium Begins Production at Mali’s Key Goulamina Lithium Mine

Ganfeng Lithium Set to Start Production at Goulamina Mine in Mali

Ganfeng Lithium, the leading lithium producer in China, is preparing to launch production at the Goulamina lithium mine in Mali, a major milestone in its global growth strategy. The company has finalized the first phase of the ore crushing production line and aims to produce its first batch of lithium concentrate, known as spodumene, by year-end.

Two-Phase Expansion Plan

The Goulamina project is set to unfold in two phases, with the first phase beginning construction in 2022. This initial phase is anticipated to yield 506,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate annually. While the timeline for the second phase remains unspecified, it is expected to boost the mine’s total production capacity to 1 million tonnes per year.

Strengthening Market Position Through Full Ownership

Ganfeng currently owns 60% of the Goulamina project in collaboration with Australia’s Leo Lithium. The company has plans to acquire the remaining 40% stake, allowing it to gain full control over the project. This acquisition will further solidify Ganfeng’s dominance in the global lithium market.

Strategic Diversification in Africa

The Goulamina project is part of a larger trend among Chinese companies to diversify their lithium supply chains in response to increasing demand from the electric vehicle sector. Ganfeng, along with other firms like Huayou and Zijin Mining, is intensifying exploration efforts across Africa. With significant investments in regions including Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Ireland, and China, Ganfeng is strategically positioned to reduce its reliance on traditional suppliers in Australia and South America.
