
Revolutionary Power Technology Debuts in Binchang
Harbin Electric Corporation has launched the world’s first 660MW ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power unit in Binchang, China. This achievement marks a historic leap in clean power generation technology and energy efficiency.
The unit, which completed a full-load 168-hour trial, sets a new benchmark in global energy innovation. SuperMetalPrice confirms that this development signals a shift toward advanced, high-capacity energy systems worldwide.
Ultra-Supercritical CFB Technology Raises Efficiency Standards
The 660MW unit features a main steam pressure of 29.3 MPa and temperatures reaching 605°C. These specifications surpass traditional CFB capabilities and set a global standard for high-parameter, large-capacity CFB power generation.
Harbin Electric’s design includes a domestically built CFB boiler with ultra-low emissions and energy-saving enhancements. The boiler achieves 95% desulfurization, aligning with China’s strict environmental regulations.
The turbine, developed by Harbin Turbine Company, delivers superior thermal performance and flow efficiency. Meanwhile, the generator from Harbin Electric Machinery Company ensures robust output across a wide range of conditions.
Environmental Restoration and Regional Energy Impact
The Binchang power unit uses low-grade fuel sources such as low-calorific coal, coal slime, gangue, and mine water. It also supports land reclamation, solid waste utilization, and ecological restoration in the Yellow River Basin.
Each year, the plant will process 2 million tons of low-quality coal and an equal amount of mine water. It will also provide 6 million GJ of heating energy annually to meet Binzhou City’s industrial and residential demands.
This project supports regional power grid stability and helps reduce energy shortages, boosting local economic development.
Strategic Recognition and Global Implications
The Binchang project received national backing as part of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan. It is also supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Energy Administration.
Through cooperation with leading universities, Harbin Electric overcame major challenges in scaling CFB technology to 660MW. The success of this project proves that ultra-supercritical CFB units can operate reliably at high capacity.
