Hindalco to Invest $5.21 Billion in Aluminum and Copper Businesses in India

Hindalco Industries Ltd., part of the Aditya Birla Group, has announced an investment of 450 billion rupees ($5.21 billion) in India. This Hindalco investment in India will support its aluminum, copper, and specialty alumina businesses. The announcement was made on March 20 during the unveiling of Hindalco’s new brand identity. The investment aims to boost Hindalco’s capacity for high-precision products, particularly in key sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy, and aerospace.

 

Driving Innovation and Sustainability with Advanced Materials

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, emphasized Hindalco’s role as a global leader. With 52 plants in 10 countries, the company produces a wide range of products that contribute to the global economy. The new investment will focus on advanced materials, specifically those required for automotive, packaging, energy storage, and aerospace industries.

Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco, noted that the company is transitioning from a traditional metal manufacturer to an innovation-driven solutions provider. Hindalco’s new brand identity, “Engineering Better Futures,” reflects its focus on sustainability, circularity, durability, and precision engineering. These values are at the core of Hindalco’s future growth plans.

 

Strategic Partnerships and Green Initiatives

Hindalco is forming strategic partnerships to accelerate innovation across industries. The company is developing lightweight materials for the automotive and electric vehicle markets. These materials will improve both efficiency and sustainability. In packaging, Hindalco is focusing on circular solutions to reduce waste and increase recyclability. Hindalco is also working with battery manufacturers to create aluminum and copper materials for energy storage solutions, specifically for anode and cathode components.

Sustainability remains a key focus for Hindalco. The company is advancing green initiatives, including India’s first electronics recycling plant by Birla Copper. It is also working on a 100-megawatt renewable energy project in Odisha. This project combines wind, solar, and pumped hydro storage to provide reliable, eco-friendly power.

Hindalco’s focus on sustainability has earned it recognition as the World’s Most Sustainable Aluminum Company for the fifth year in a row. The company’s dedication to energy-efficient production, waste reduction, and eco-friendly materials aligns with India’s net-zero goals.

Hindalco is the world’s largest aluminum company by revenue. It is also the second-largest copper rods manufacturer outside China. The company operates across the entire aluminum value chain, from bauxite mining to downstream processing. Hindalco, together with its subsidiary Novelis, is a global leader in flat-rolled aluminum products. It is also the largest recycler of aluminum in the world. Hindalco is India’s largest copper producer, meeting over half the country’s copper needs with its facilities in Gujarat.
