In a significant advancement for renewable energy, the joint venture between Iberdrola and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) has successfully completed the installation of wind turbines at the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
Project Overview and Capacity
Located 30 kilometers northeast of Rügen Island in Pomerania, the Baltic Eagle wind farm consists of 50 turbines, each boasting a capacity of 9.53MW. The turbines, supplied by Vestas, were installed by Fred Olsen Windcarrier. Once fully operational, the wind farm is projected to supply renewable energy to approximately 475,000 households annually while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 800,000 tonnes.
Timeline and Future Prospects
Construction on the Baltic Eagle project commenced in April 2022, with the first offshore wind turbine installed in May 2023. This initiative is part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, which includes the operational 350MW Wikinger wind farm and the planned 315MW Windanker project. When all three projects are completed by 2026, the Baltic Hub will have a combined capacity exceeding 1.1GW, representing an investment of around €3.7 billion.
Milestone Achievements
Iberdrola’s executive chairman, Ignacio Galán, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “The completion of turbine installation at the Baltic Eagle wind farm is an important milestone in what is a record year for Iberdrola’s offshore wind activity.” He noted that the company is on track to achieve nearly 5,000 MW of offshore capacity globally by the end of 2026.
Strengthening Partnerships
Masdar joined the Baltic Eagle project in July 2023 by acquiring a 49% stake from Iberdrola, valuing the project at nearly €1.6 billion. The partnership has expanded with a €15 billion agreement announced at COP28, aimed at exploring further offshore wind and green hydrogen initiatives in key markets such as Germany, the UK, and the US. Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi remarked, “Today’s announcement is an important landmark in the progress of Baltic Eagle, the project which launched our partnership with Iberdrola.”
This collaboration signifies a pivotal step toward enhancing clean energy solutions, further solidifying both companies’ commitment to sustainable energy development.
