Iberdrola has successfully obtained planning approval for its 315MW Windanker offshore wind farm from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). This approval paves the way for the company to begin construction in the German Baltic Sea. Upon completion in 2026, the Windanker wind farm will significantly contribute to renewable energy production and support Iberdrola’s growth strategy in the German market.
Details of the Windanker Offshore Wind Farm Project
The Windanker project will feature 21 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines. Each turbine has a capacity of 15 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 315 MW. Once operational, the Windanker wind farm is expected to power approximately 315,000 households. Iberdrola has already secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the wind farm’s output with both industrial and commercial customers.
Windar, a Spanish company, is manufacturing the 21 foundation structures for the project, including monopiles and transition pieces. These foundations will be installed during the summer, with internal park cabling set to be completed by the end of the year.
Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub Expansion
Windanker marks Iberdrola’s third major offshore wind project in Germany, following the Wikinger and Baltic Eagle wind farms. Together, these projects make up the Baltic Hub. By 2026, the Baltic Hub will have a total capacity of over 1.1 GW, with a total investment of around €3.7 billion. This expansion reinforces Iberdrola’s commitment to Germany’s renewable energy market and strengthens its position as a leader in the offshore wind sector.
In December 2024, Kansai, a Japanese energy corporation, acquired a 49% stake in the Windanker project. Iberdrola remains the majority shareholder with a 51% controlling stake.
Iberdrola’s Commitment to Renewable Energy
Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Germany, stated, “With the approval from the BSH, we are one step closer to realizing our Baltic Hub in the German Baltic Sea. Our three wind farms will contribute a total capacity of 1.1 GW. We continue to grow and demonstrate our commitment to the German renewable energy market.”
Conclusion
The approval of the Windanker offshore wind farm is a significant achievement for Iberdrola in the renewable energy sector. As part of the Baltic Hub, the Windanker project will help drive the transition to clean energy in Germany. With a total capacity of 315 MW, Windanker will play a key role in powering up to 315,000 households by 2026.
