India’s Green Steel Certification Gains Momentum

India’s steel sector moves steadily toward sustainability. So far, 39 producers have applied for green steel certification under the nation’s new taxonomy. This system evaluates steel plants based on carbon emission intensity. As a result, it aligns closely with India’s goal to reduce its industrial environmental footprint. The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) manages the process, ensuring accurate measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) across applicants.

Understanding the Green Steel Taxonomy in India

India introduced its green steel taxonomy in March 2025, with implementation planned for the 2026/2027 fiscal year. It classifies steel into three tiers based on CO2 emissions per ton of rolled product. For example, steel emitting under 2.2 tons earns a three-star rating. Meanwhile, production emitting less than 1.6 tons qualifies for five-star status. Moreover, the system will undergo revision every three years to reflect ongoing technological progress.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

India’s green steel certification program marks a significant move toward decarbonizing one of the world’s largest steel industries. Notably, by prioritizing low-emission steel in public procurement, the government not only boosts cleaner production but also increases demand for sustainable materials. Furthermore, this strategy sets a strong example for Asia’s steel markets. It helps position India as a green steel leader and strengthens the sector’s resilience amid global net-zero policies.
