IperionX, a leader in titanium production, secured a $47.1 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to bolster the domestic titanium supply chain. This deal will support the production of critical materials for the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries.
Two-Phase Development Plan to Expand U.S. Titanium Capabilities
The funding will fuel a two-phase development plan. The DoD will invest $5 million through the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program in the first phase. IperionX will match this with $1 million to advance the Titan Critical Minerals Project in Tennessee. This project aims to create a domestic titanium, rare earth, and zircon source, vital for national security and economic resilience.
The second phase, funded by the remaining $42.1 million, will focus on expanding IperionX’s Titanium Manufacturing Campus in Virginia. The goal is to increase titanium production capacity and integrate processes vertically. This investment will enhance the company’s ability to meet rising demand and improve manufacturing efficiency.
Advanced Technology to Replace Foreign Supply Chains
IperionX plans to reduce U.S. dependency on foreign-controlled titanium sources. CEO Anastasios Arima emphasized, “This award is a significant step in reshoring U.S. titanium production. Our innovative technologies, combined with the Titan Project, will create a resilient, end-to-end titanium supply chain.”
Titanium is critical for industries like aerospace, defense, and space exploration. However, its high cost and reliance on foreign suppliers have limited its use. IperionX’s proprietary technologies, including Hydrogen-Assisted Metallothermic Reduction (HAMR) and Hydrogen Sintering and Phase Transformation (HSPT), provide an affordable, high-performance alternative to traditional titanium production methods.
DoD’s Commitment to Domestic Supply Chain Security
In 2023, the DoD began researching alternatives to the current import-heavy titanium supply chain. The department sought solutions that could mine, process, refine, and recycle titanium domestically, improving cost, quality, and energy efficiency. IperionX’s proposal stood out as an innovative, end-to-end solution to reshoring U.S. titanium production.
This funding aligns with the Trump Administration’s push to secure domestic supply chains for critical materials, reducing reliance on foreign sources. The DoD’s support reflects the growing emphasis on national security and economic stability through strengthening U.S. manufacturing capabilities.
IperionX’s titanium supply chain will drive the future of U.S. manufacturing by delivering a low-cost, scalable, and resilient solution.
