Italy’s steel industry recorded a sharp increase in production in March 2025, signaling a potential recovery after last year’s decline. According to Federacciai data reported by SteelOrbis, Italian steelmakers produced 2.02 million tons of steel in March, marking an 11.2% increase month-on-month and a 6% rise year-on-year.
First-Quarter Steel Output Shows Steady Growth
From January to March 2025, Italy’s total steel production reached 5.53 million tons, up 3.1% compared to the same period in 2024. This indicates a modest but stable growth in output following the industry’s downturn last year.
Flat steel production grew more significantly. In March, Italian producers delivered 904,000 tons of flat steel—up 15.1% compared to February and 13.6% year-on-year. Over the first quarter, flat production rose 9.1% year-on-year to 2.5 million tons.
Meanwhile, long products also saw growth in March, rising 20% month-on-month to 1.2 million tons. However, year-on-year growth was more modest at 1.2%. For the first quarter, long products output decreased slightly by 0.9% to 3.1 million tons.
2024 Performance Still Weighs on Annual Outlook
Despite recent monthly gains, Italy steel output in 2024 declined 5% from 2023, reaching 20 million tons. December’s production dropped sharply, falling 33.4% month-on-month and 8.8% year-on-year to 1.199 million tons.
Flat steel was more severely impacted, with annual production dropping 9.7% to 8.6 million tons. The weakness of the automotive and industrial sectors, combined with increased imports, weighed heavily on this segment. In contrast, long products remained more resilient due to stable construction demand, declining only 0.2% to 11.7 million tons.
Across the European Union, total steel production in 2024 rose 2.6% year-on-year to 129.5 million tons. However, global steel production declined slightly by 0.9% to 1.84 billion tons.
As reported by SuperMetalPrice, the recent uptick in Italy steel output marks a positive shift, though broader challenges across the steel sector persist.
