JA Solar has secured a landmark agreement with China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) to supply high-efficiency n-type photovoltaic (PV) modules for Africa’s largest PV-storage project. The deal, signed on January 14, 2025, at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, involves the supply of 1.25GW of modules for the Abydos Phase II PV-Storage Project.
A Milestone for Africa’s Renewable Energy Future
The Abydos Phase II project, located in Egypt, is set to be the largest PV installation in Africa, featuring a 1GW photovoltaic capacity alongside a 600MWh battery storage system. Once completed, the project will generate around 3,000 GWh annually, providing electricity for over 500,000 households and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 1 million tonnes per year. This initiative is a significant step in boosting Egypt’s renewable energy capacity and enhancing grid stability.
The project is being developed by AMEA Power, with CEEC as the main contractor. Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the strategic importance of the project for the country’s Clean Energy Action Plan and its Vision 2030 goals. He called on Chinese enterprises to continue investing in Egypt to improve the country’s energy infrastructure and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
Expansion of Africa’s PV Capabilities
In addition to this significant Phase II agreement, JA Solar has already contributed to the successful completion of the 500MW Abydos Solar PV Plant, one of Africa’s largest grid-connected PV projects. The collaboration between AMEA Power, CEEC, and JA Solar has been instrumental in advancing renewable energy in Africa. The successful outcomes of these projects highlight the growing role of photovoltaic technology in transforming the energy landscape in the region.
