Joint Venture for Black Mass Recycling: Canada’s Electra Forms Partnership

Electra Partners with Three Fires Group for Battery Recycling Plant: Electra Battery Materials, a Canadian startup, has formed a joint venture with Indigenous-owned Three Fires Group to establish a lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Ontario. The plant will focus on extracting black mass from end-of-life batteries, which will then be processed at Electra’s future refinery.

Aki Battery Recycling Joint Venture: Named Aki Battery Recycling, this joint venture assigns Three Fires Group to raise funds and select the facility’s location, while Electra will lead in technical and commercial aspects. The black mass, comprising cathode and anode materials, will be processed to recover critical minerals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite for reuse in battery manufacturing.

Closed-Loop Supply Chain Initiative: This project is a key step in Electra’s strategy to establish a closed-loop supply chain for battery materials across North America. The company is also prioritizing the completion of its cobalt sulfate refinery and plans to enhance its black mass recycling operations, as well as build a nickel sulfate plant and a precursor cathode active material facility in Canada, alongside developing the Iron Creek cobalt-copper project in Idaho.
