Korea Zinc Enhances Competitiveness with Onsan Smelter Rationalization Project

Korea Zinc Onsan Smelter Rationalization Project

Onsan Smelter Overhaul Enhances Efficiency and Strengthens Korea Zinc’s Global Competitiveness

Korea Zinc has completed its major Onsan Smelter Rationalization Project, achieving substantial improvements in cost reduction and lead production. The initiative, carried out in 2024, optimized key operations, reduced logistics expenses, and increased annual lead output. This transformation supports Korea Zinc’s goal to boost profitability despite global market volatility.

Operational Efficiency Leads to Higher Output and Lower Costs

Korea Zinc focused on streamlining smelting processes and cutting logistics and energy costs. Annual lead production increased from 420,000 tons to 450,000 tons. Meanwhile, logistics costs dropped to KRW 3 billion—just one-third of last year’s figure. These results reflect enhanced smelting performance and increased operational margins.

Strong Leadership and Workforce Unity Drive Results

Chief Smelting Officer President Tae-Woong Jung led the project hands-on, balancing duties between Onsan and Seoul. He coordinated 23 key personnel and cross-functional task forces to optimize production. In addition, Korea Zinc’s 37 years of labor stability supported strong execution and workforce alignment. This harmony helped maintain productivity throughout the process.

Strategic Outlook Amid Global Headwinds

Even with external challenges such as high energy prices and raw material risks, Korea Zinc continues to adapt. The company strengthened internal systems to reduce exposure to fluctuating treatment charges (TC) and international conflict impacts. Korea Zinc remains committed to global non-ferrous market leadership through continued innovation and operational discipline.
