Cosmo Oil and Mitsui Collaborate to Scale SAF Production

LanzaJet’s sustainable fuel technology is advancing in Japan. Cosmo Oil has secured government funding to deploy LanzaJet’s ethanol-to-SAF technology in a major project. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) approved the funding, marking a major step toward increasing the country’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply. The project, developed in collaboration with Mitsui & Co., aims to establish a large-scale SAF production facility by 2029.

A Key Milestone for Japan’s Biofuels Industry

Japan’s aviation industry is poised for a significant shift with this new project. Using LanzaJet’s alcohol-to-jet technology, Cosmo Oil will help diversify aviation fuels. The project will produce 150,000 kiloliters of SAF and 17,000 kiloliters of renewable diesel annually. This facility will be located at the Sakaide Logistics Base, a strategic site in Japan’s growing biofuels sector.

By 2030, Japan plans to replace 10% of its petroleum-based fuels with sustainable alternatives. This collaboration with LanzaJet plays a crucial role in that effort, enhancing Japan’s position as a leader in green energy.

Long-Term Impact on Aviation and Biofuels Markets

This partnership not only addresses global SAF demand but also strengthens Japan’s biofuels market. By boosting domestic SAF production, the project will enhance the country’s energy diversity. The move comes at a critical time as global aviation seeks to reduce carbon emissions and transition toward cleaner fuels.

With the increasing push for sustainability in aviation, this project is a major leap in Japan’s transition to greener energy sources. The collaboration with Mitsui and LanzaJet provides the necessary expertise to accelerate production and create long-term value.
