Li-Cycle’s Black Mass Production Sees 21% Drop in 2024

Li-Cycle

Li-Cycle, a Canadian battery recycling company, experienced a 21% decrease in black mass production during 2024. Specifically, the company produced 5,370 metric tonnes of black mass and equivalents. This figure includes approximately 1,200 metric tonnes in the fourth quarter. In contrast, they produced 6,825 metric tonnes in full-year 2023. Additionally, the fourth quarter of 2023 saw 1,941 metric tonnes produced.

Black mass, as you know, consists of shredded lithium-ion battery cathodes. It contains vital materials. These materials include lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Therefore, its production is crucial for the battery recycling industry.

Factors Affecting Production

Several factors likely contributed to this decrease. However, Li-Cycle plans to release full financial and operating results in March. Consequently, more details about the drop will be available then. SuperMetalPrice will provide further updates.

Industry Impact

The reduction in black mass production affects the supply of critical battery materials. Moreover, it impacts the broader electric vehicle and battery industries. Ultimately, the market will watch how Li-Cycle addresses these challenges.
