Morlais Tidal Scheme Set to Power 180,000 Homes by 2026

The Morlais tidal energy project in North Wales, managed by the social enterprise Menter Môn, aims to become a global leader in renewable energy. As the first project of its kind, it is set to be operational by 2026. This marks a significant step toward green energy innovation. With an £8 million equity stake from the Welsh Government, the initiative is well-positioned to create a sustainable, tidal-powered energy future for Wales.

The Anglesey site will generate enough energy to power up to 180,000 typical Welsh households. The project’s unique “plug and play” model will enable tidal energy device developers to scale up operations more efficiently. This will reduce costs and generate clean electricity. Moreover, this initiative will strengthen Wales’ position as a leader in the global renewable energy market.

Welsh Government Investment to Boost Capacity and Create Jobs

The Welsh Government’s £8 million investment will fund the Cydnerth phase of the Morlais tidal energy project. This phase includes strengthening the grid connection at Parc Cybi, Holyhead. This will ensure the efficient delivery of renewable energy to the region.

Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy, and Planning, emphasized the government’s commitment to making Wales a hub for emerging tidal technologies. “Our investment will support Menter Môn Morlais to scale up capacity, develop an industrial cluster for tidal energy innovation, and deliver jobs and growth through pioneering technology,” Evans said.

Dafydd Gruffydd, Managing Director of Menter Môn, expressed his appreciation for the funding. It will support their vision to make North Wales a leader in tidal energy innovation. The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region. This includes clean energy production and job creation led by the Morlais tidal energy project.

John Idris Jones, Chair of Menter Môn Morlais Limited, added that the Welsh Government’s backing is crucial in unlocking tidal energy resources. This will create a resilient, green economy in North Wales.
