Smiore Gets Green Light to Expand Manganese Ore Output

India’s Sandur Manganese and Iron Ore (Smiore) has received environmental clearance to increase its manganese ore production capacity in Bellary, Karnataka. The Environment Ministry and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) approved the expansion under the Air and Water Act, allowing output to rise from 430,000 to 550,000 tonnes per year.

Expansion Supports Ferro-Alloy Growth in Steel Sector

This move will boost the supply of ferro-manganese and silico-manganese, which are key inputs in steel manufacturing. Smiore operates two major mines, with reserves of 17 million tonnes of manganese ore and 117 million tonnes of iron ore. During the April–June quarter, the company sold 9,396 tonnes of ferro-alloy, marking a 35% year-over-year increase.

Although a timeline for the expansion’s completion was not disclosed, the project positions Smiore to better serve rising domestic and international demand for ferro-alloys.
