Manganese Ore Production Boosted by India’s Smiore in Karnataka

Environmental Clearance Granted to Smiore for Manganese Ore Production Increase:

India’s Sandur Manganese and Iron Ore (Smiore) has secured environmental approval to boost its manganese ore production capacity in Bellary, Karnataka. The Environment Ministry and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) have approved the plan, allowing output to rise from 430,000 tonnes per year to 550,000 tonnes per year under the Air and Water Act.

Production Expansion to Meet Growing Demand:

This expansion is anticipated to enhance the production of ferro-manganese and silico-manganese, vital alloys in steel manufacturing. Smiore operates two mines with estimated reserves of 17 million tonnes of manganese ore and 117 million tonnes of iron ore. In the April-June quarter, the company reported selling 9,396 tonnes of ferro-alloy, a 35% increase compared to the previous year. However, a timeline for the project’s completion has not been disclosed, positioning Smiore to better meet the increasing demand for ferro-alloys both in India and globally.
