Masdar and Emsteel Successfully Complete Green Steel Pilot

Milestone in Green Steel Production
Clean energy leader Masdar and steel manufacturer Emsteel have announced the successful completion of a pioneering pilot project that utilizes green hydrogen to produce green steel in Abu Dhabi. This innovative project marks a significant step forward in the decarbonization of the steel industry, which is crucial for achieving global net-zero goals.

Certification of Renewable Hydrogen
The green hydrogen used in the pilot project has received certification from Avance Labs, in line with the ISO 19870 methodology for hydrogen, validated by Bureau Veritas. This certification underscores the commitment to sustainable practices in steel production, which is traditionally carbon-intensive and contributes 7% to 8% of global carbon emissions.

Potential for UAE as a Green Steel Hub
Both Masdar and Emsteel highlight the growing global demand for green steel as a unique opportunity for the UAE to become a major production hub. The National Green Certificates Program, initiated by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, aims to promote sustainable building materials, including green steel.

Collaboration for Decarbonization
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that the project exemplifies world-class innovation in utilizing green hydrogen to decarbonize the steel value chain. This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s low-carbon hydrogen policy, aimed at economic growth, sustainability, and energy security.

Emsteel’s Commitment to Clean Energy
Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, group CEO of Emsteel, reiterated the company’s dedication to decarbonization efforts. With over 80% of its energy sourced from clean energy in 2023 and a groundbreaking CO2 emissions capture initiative, Emsteel operates with 45% less carbon intensity than the global average. The partnership with Masdar is positioned as a key driver in the ongoing decarbonization of the steel sector.
