MATEC Inc., Japan’s top metal recycler, has unveiled an advanced shredder residue (ASR) processing plant in Tomakomai, near Sapporo. This plant is a milestone in recycling technology and highlights MATEC’s dedication to efficient metal recovery. With an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, it is the largest facility of its kind in Japan.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Metal Recovery

The Tomakomai plant uses state-of-the-art sorting technologies from STEINERT to separate materials from shredder residue. It features two sorting lines. One line targets stainless steel and heavy metals, while the other focuses on lighter materials like copper. These lines use advanced STEINERT systems, such as non-ferrous metal separators, electromagnets, and sensor-based sorting systems. The systems process even the smallest particles, under 6 mm, boosting recovery rates.

The plant handles materials from six other MATEC plants, including shredder light fractions (SLF) and Zorba materials. STEINERT’s sensor sorting systems, like ISS induction sorting and KSS CLI systems, efficiently recover copper and stainless steel. These systems work across various particle sizes, ensuring high efficiency in material separation.

Sustainable Shredder Residue Processing

MATEC’s ASR plant emphasizes sustainability through resource-saving practices. It uses non-metallic fractions, such as plastic and rubber, as fuel for local cement plants. This not only reduces waste but also supports a circular economy, where materials are reused, conserving natural resources.

MATEC’s investment in top-tier recycling technology sets a new standard in Japan’s recycling industry. By recovering valuable metals like copper and stainless steel, the plant plays a key role in cutting the metal recycling industry’s carbon footprint.

Collaboration Between Zenki and STEINERT

Zenki, a top plant manufacturer known for steel construction, teamed up with STEINERT to create the plant’s structure and sorting system. This collaboration ensured the plant’s efficiency and durability. Armin Vogel, Head of Regional Sales Asia at STEINERT, praised the partnership, saying combining Zenki’s steel expertise with STEINERT’s recycling know-how resulted in a revolutionary plant design. MATEC’s Foreign Relations Manager, Serhii Govorovskyi, also recognized STEINERT’s consistent support in delivering reliable, high-quality machines.

Pioneering the Future of Recycling

The Tomakomai ASR plant shows how sustainability and technological innovation can work together. MATEC’s investment in cutting-edge recycling technology highlights its leadership in Japan’s recycling industry. The company’s motto, “I ❤️RECYCLE,” reflects its commitment to sustainability and leading the charge in recovering valuable raw materials. STEINERT continues to offer tailored solutions, helping companies worldwide adopt more sustainable practices in their recycling operations.
