Strategic Contracts for Sizewell C Nuclear Project
Mirion Technologies (NYSE: MIR), a leader in radiation safety solutions, has secured two major contracts for its involvement in the UK’s Sizewell C nuclear power station project. Located in East Suffolk, Sizewell C is a planned 3.2-gigawatt nuclear power plant that will contribute significantly to the UK’s low-carbon energy goals. The plant will provide electricity for around 6 million homes and is designed based on EDF’s European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology. It is modeled on the Hinkley Point C power station currently under construction in Somerset, highlighting a key development in the UK’s nuclear energy future.

Two Key Technological Solutions for Reactor Safety and Efficiency

1. Electrical Penetration Systems (EPS) Contract (October 2024)
Mirion Technologies has been awarded a contract to supply Electrical Penetration Systems (EPS) for the Sizewell C reactor. EPS is a crucial technology used in nuclear power plants to allow the safe passage of electrical cables through reactor containment walls while ensuring a reliable seal. These systems are designed to maintain electrical integrity within the reactor, allowing uninterrupted flow of electrical circuits, which is essential for reactor safety during normal operation and in the event of unexpected conditions. Mirion’s EPS technology will ensure that the containment building remains secure while facilitating vital communication between the reactor and external systems.

2. Boron Meter Systems Contract (May 2024)
In addition to EPS, Mirion Technologies was awarded a contract earlier this year for the provision of Boron Meter Systems, critical components in controlling nuclear reactions within light-water nuclear reactors. Boron is used as a control element in nuclear plants to manage the reactivity of the reactor. Accurate measurement of boron concentration in the reactor’s coolant water is vital to ensuring the plant operates safely and efficiently. Mirion’s Boron Meter Systems will play a pivotal role in monitoring and controlling these levels, contributing to the overall safety and operational stability of the Sizewell C plant.

Ongoing Partnership with the Sizewell C Project Team
These contracts strengthen the ongoing collaboration between Mirion Technologies and the Sizewell C project team. As a recognized global leader in radiation safety and monitoring systems, Mirion is well-positioned to support the UK’s efforts to expand its nuclear energy capacity. The partnership with the Sizewell C team ensures that cutting-edge technology will be incorporated into the design and operation of the plant, reflecting the UK’s commitment to transitioning to a more sustainable energy future.

Fernando Tiefensee, Programme Manager at Sizewell C, emphasized the importance of Mirion’s contribution: “Mirion’s ability to provide high-quality, reliable systems that seamlessly integrate with our EPR reactor design is crucial for the success of Sizewell C. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable nuclear power, which will be instrumental in meeting the UK’s future energy needs.”

Industry Impact: Advancing Low-Carbon Nuclear Energy
The Sizewell C project aligns with the UK’s broader goals to reduce carbon emissions and ensure energy security. The successful development of Sizewell C, bolstered by Mirion Technologies’ advanced systems, is expected to play a significant role in providing a reliable and sustainable source of low-carbon electricity. This marks another step forward in the UK’s nuclear energy ambitions, providing a cleaner energy option that will complement other low-carbon technologies, such as wind and solar power.

Looking Forward to Sustainable Energy Solutions
Mirion Technologies is set to continue its involvement in the nuclear energy sector as part of the Sizewell C project. The company’s proven track record in providing radiation safety solutions for the nuclear industry positions it as a key partner in the realization of the UK’s energy goals. By contributing essential safety and monitoring systems, Mirion is helping to ensure the development of a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible nuclear power infrastructure.

Loïc Eloy, President of Mirion’s Technologies Group, concluded: “We are excited to be part of the Sizewell C project, which represents a significant leap toward a more sustainable and low-carbon energy future for the United Kingdom. Our innovative solutions will support the safe and reliable operation of the plant as it contributes to the UK’s long-term energy strategy.”
