Mirion Technologies (NYSE: MIR) has secured two major contracts to support the UK’s Sizewell C nuclear power station. The project, located in East Suffolk, will help meet the UK’s low-carbon energy goals, generating 3.2 gigawatts of power to supply approximately 6 million homes. Modeled after EDF’s European Pressurised Reactor (EPR), Sizewell C is set to play a key role in the UK’s nuclear energy future.
Key Contracts: EPS and Boron Meter Systems
- Electrical Penetration Systems (EPS) Contract Mirion will supply Electrical Penetration Systems (EPS) for Sizewell C’s reactor. These systems enable the safe passage of electrical cables through reactor containment walls while maintaining a reliable seal. EPS technology ensures electrical integrity and safety during both normal and emergency reactor operations. By supporting communication between the reactor and external systems, it plays a vital role in plant efficiency.
- Boron Meter Systems Contract In addition, Mirion will provide Boron Meter Systems for Sizewell C. These systems monitor boron concentration in coolant water, which controls the reactivity of the reactor. Accurate measurements are essential to maintaining safe and efficient reactor operations. Mirion’s technology will support the plant’s safety and overall efficiency by ensuring the correct boron levels at all times.
Advancing Low-Carbon Energy Goals
These contracts strengthen the collaboration between Mirion Technologies and the Sizewell C project team. As a leader in radiation safety and monitoring, Mirion’s involvement ensures the plant benefits from advanced, reliable systems. Fernando Tiefensee, Programme Manager at Sizewell C, emphasized the importance of Mirion’s technology: “Mirion’s systems seamlessly integrate with our EPR reactor design. Their contribution is crucial for delivering safe and sustainable nuclear power.”
The Sizewell C project aligns with the UK’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. The plant will provide a reliable source of low-carbon electricity, supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources alongside wind and solar power.
Loïc Eloy, President of Mirion Technologies, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “We’re proud to support the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy. Our systems will ensure the safe operation of Sizewell C and contribute to the UK’s long-term energy strategy.”
