The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) has published the much-awaited 2025 edition of its “Standard Test Methods“, a vital resource for industries working with metal powders, Powder Metallurgy (PM), Metal Injection Molding (MIM), and Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM). This comprehensive new volume includes 52 standards that cover a wide range of testing procedures, from terminology and equipment to advanced manufacturing techniques in powder-based technologies.
Key Updates: New Standards and Revisions
This latest edition comes with several key updates to keep pace with evolving industry needs. Alongside revised standards and updated figures, the volume introduces four new test methods that address modern challenges in metal powder processing and additive manufacturing. These are:
- Standard 76: Determination of Ejection Stresses for Uniaxially Compacted PM Test Specimens – A method that helps analyze the forces involved in ejecting parts from molds, critical for enhancing production efficiency in PM.
- Standard 77: Test Method for Preparing and Evaluating Un-notched Charpy Impact Energy Specimens of Materials Produced by Sinter-Based Metal AM Technologies – This method focuses on testing the durability of sintered metal parts made via additive manufacturing, an increasingly important area as AM technologies grow in use.
- Standard 78: Test Method for Preparing and Evaluating V-Notched Charpy Impact Energy Specimens of Materials Produced by Fusion-Based Metal AM Technologies – This method addresses the performance of materials produced using fusion-based metal AM technologies, widely used in industries like aerospace and automotive.
- Standard 79: Test Method for Preparation of AC and DC Soft-Magnetic PM Test Specimens – A new approach for testing soft-magnetic materials, key to applications in electrical motors and other power-related devices.
These new standards enhance the reliability and accuracy of tests, supporting industries that increasingly rely on advanced materials and manufacturing processes.
Impact on Industry Practices and Compliance
The release of the 2025 edition makes previous versions of the Standard Test Methods obsolete. This change underscores the importance of adopting the latest protocols to maintain quality assurance and ensure that manufacturing processes meet the most up-to-date industry standards. Companies and organizations are encouraged to integrate these revised standards into their quality management practices to ensure compliance with current technological advancements in powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, and material science.
Availability and Member Discounts
The 2025 edition of the Standard Test Methods is now available for purchase on the MPIF website, with members of the federation eligible for discounts. For professionals working in metal powder industries, additive manufacturing, and materials testing, this new volume is an indispensable reference that ensures industry leaders can stay ahead in terms of compliance, innovation, and manufacturing efficiency.
