Nexans to Launch Recycled-Content Copper Production in France

Nexans – Nexans in France

French electrical wire and cable manufacturer Nexans has announced a significant investment to establish a recycled-content copper production line at its Lens facility, in collaboration with Italy’s Continuus-Properzi. This initiative aims to address the increasing global demand for copper while promoting sustainable practices in the industry.

Strategic Investment for Sustainability
The new production line is set to become operational by 2026 and will focus on continuously producing wire rod from up to 100% recycled copper. This move aligns with Nexans’ broader strategy to enhance its scrap collection efforts across Europe, in partnership with Suez. “Recycling is emerging as a key solution to possible shortages of copper, which is essential to electrification,” the company stated, highlighting the importance of sustainability in meeting future demands.

Expanding Capacity and Circular Economy Goals
Nexans’ Lens facility, established in 1971, currently stands as France’s sole copper rod foundry. The company plans to invest over 90 million euros (approximately $97.4 million) to increase its wire rod production capacity by more than 50% and boost its copper scrap recycling capacity to manage up to 80,000 metric tons annually. This initiative will position Nexans as a vital player in the European copper circular economy.

Innovative Collaboration with Continuus-Properzi
Continuus-Properzi, based in Milan, will provide the technology necessary for this project, enabling Nexans to maintain and enhance its vertically integrated status. Continuus-Properzi President Giulio Properzi expressed pride in the collaboration, emphasizing the long-standing history of working with recycled copper scrap.

Commitment to Carbon Reduction and Local Employment
Nexans aims to reduce its carbon footprint and increase the proportion of recycled copper in its cables to 30% by 2030. “By ensuring strategic independence and staying ahead of the raw materials crisis, we are proving that an innovative industry can be a local industry,” said Nexans CEO Christopher Guérin. This investment not only supports local employment but also anticipates a growing trend of utilizing waste materials for future growth.

Global Presence and Market Impact
With approximately 28,500 employees across 41 countries, Nexans serves various sectors, including power generation and transmission. This latest initiative reflects Nexans’ commitment to innovation and sustainability within the cable manufacturing industry, aiming for a self-sufficient supply chain through efficient recycling practices.
