Novelis Inc. has produced an aluminum coil made entirely from 100% recycled end-of-life automotive scrap. This milestone demonstrates Novelis’ commitment to increasing recycled content in its products, supporting sustainability within the automotive industry.

Advancing Circularity and Sustainability in Automotive Manufacturing

The aluminum coil was specifically designed for the European automotive market. It meets the high standards for car body outer skin applications. This achievement reinforces Novelis’ focus on sustainability while ensuring strength, quality, and performance. It also addresses the growing demand for eco-friendly materials in the automotive industry.

Novelis sourced the aluminum scrap through the Automotive Circularity Platform (ACP), launched in 2023 with Thyssenkrupp Materials Services. The ACP is an open platform that improves access to high-quality end-of-life materials for recycling. It helps digitalize the market for secondary materials, improving supply chain efficiency and maximizing material recovery from vehicles at the end of their life cycle.

Paving the Way for a Circular Economy in Aluminum Production

Automotive manufacturers are focusing on decarbonizing their products. They are also ensuring products remain lightweight, safe, and affordable. Michael Hahne, Vice President of Novelis Europe, explained that using 100% end-of-life vehicle scrap for aluminum demonstrates Novelis’ commitment to a circular economy. It also highlights the potential environmental benefits and ability to meet the high-

performance demands of modern automotive production.

Novelis plans to expand this technology. The company encourages automakers to incorporate more recycled content in future vehicle designs. By enhancing the supply chain for end-of-life aluminum scrap, Novelis aims to accelerate the shift toward a circular automotive sector. Additionally, Novelis already supplies products containing up to 85% recycled content. This is made possible through closed-loop recycling systems and growing collaboration with recyclable material suppliers.

By increasing the use of end-of-life aluminum scrap, Novelis hopes to reduce the automotive industry’s reliance on virgin materials. This shift will reduce the industry’s environmental footprint. It will also foster the growth of a circular economy in aluminum production.
