Lakewood, Ohio Launches Lithium Battery Recycling Program

Lakewood, Ohio, has launched a lithium battery recycling program to ensure safer disposal and protect local waste management facilities. This program, developed by the Division of Refuse and Recycling, will handle small household batteries, such as AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and watch-sized or smoke detector batteries. The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District partnered with Lakewood to encourage safe recycling of hazardous lithium batteries.

Why Lithium Batteries Need Special Attention

Lithium batteries are commonly used in everyday devices, but they pose a risk if not disposed of correctly. According to Stephanie Corbett from Case Western Reserve University, these batteries can be a significant fire hazard at the end of their life cycle or if damaged. Corbett highlights the importance of recycling these batteries to recover valuable minerals that are expensive and difficult to mine. Recycling helps reduce environmental impact and prevents potential dangers from improper disposal.

Program Exclusions and Safe Disposal Guidelines

The program accepts small lithium batteries from household devices. However, it excludes large rechargeable batteries, such as those found in laptops, power tools, and power banks. Residents can drop off these larger batteries at retailers like Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Staples, but only by appointment. The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District advises residents to tape over battery terminals before drop-off. This simple step reduces the risk of fires during transport and processing.

Lakewood’s recycling program aims to safely collect and recycle lithium batteries, preventing them from ending up in landfills. Chris Gordon, Lakewood’s Public Works Director, encourages residents to take advantage of the recycling program, stating that recycling instead of landfilling is a success.
