In a significant move towards renewable energy, QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies have formed a strategic partnership to develop a large-scale solar power project in Iraq. This collaboration, part of Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), will see both companies equally share ownership. Each will hold a 50% stake, pending regulatory approvals. The QatarEnergy solar project will mark a pivotal point for Iraq’s energy landscape.
Solar Project Aims to Transform Iraq’s Energy Landscape
Set to be one of the largest solar power installations globally, the project will deploy 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers. With an expected capacity of 1.25 gigawatts (GW), it will provide electricity to around 350,000 homes in Iraq’s Basra region. The QatarEnergy solar project initiative is expected to roll out in phases. Full operations are slated to begin between 2025 and 2027.
His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing its importance for Iraq’s energy strategy. He also thanked the Iraqi government and TotalEnergies for their cooperation in bringing the project to life. Al-Kaabi’s statement underscored the long-term impact the QatarEnergy solar project will have. It will help Iraq diversify its energy resources.
GGIP: A Comprehensive Plan for Iraq’s Energy Future
The solar power project is part of Iraq’s broader Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), which also focuses on reducing gas flaring and optimizing Iraq’s natural resources. TotalEnergies and Iraq’s Basra Oil Company are key players in the project. They aim to recover flared gas and convert it into electricity for power plants. This QatarEnergy solar project aligns with Iraq’s broader goals of energy sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The Global Shift Towards Renewable Energy
This partnership between QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies is part of a larger global shift toward renewable energy. The project aims to meet Iraq’s growing electricity demands while contributing to worldwide efforts to reduce carbon emissions. By investing in renewable energy sources like solar power, Iraq hopes to strengthen its energy infrastructure. Moreover, with the QatarEnergy solar project, it aims to achieve long-term energy security.
Looking Ahead
Once operational, the project will not only provide much-needed electricity for the Basra region but also play a key role in Iraq’s transition to a more sustainable and diversified energy future. With the commitment of QatarEnergy, TotalEnergies, and Iraq’s government, the solar power initiative represents a major step forward for the region’s renewable energy sector. The QatarEnergy solar project promises to be a transformative initiative for Iraq.
