In a controversial ruling, Russia has levied a staggering fine of $20 decillion against Google, citing the removal of Russian TV channels from YouTube. This penalty amounts to an unfathomable figure that far exceeds global GDP.
Unprecedented Fine Amount Explained
The fine, reported to be 2 undecillion rubles, translates to $20 decillion—an amount that dwarfs the International Monetary Fund’s estimated global GDP of $110 trillion. The legal proceedings against Google have been ongoing for four years, stemming from the tech giant’s action against a nationalist Russian channel, Tsargrad, in 2020.
Experts Doubt Collection Feasibility
Legal experts doubt that the Russian government will be able to collect the fine. Roman Yankovsky from the HSE Institute of Education noted that it is highly unlikely Google would pay such a monumental amount, given that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has a market capitalization of just over $2 trillion. Even with quarterly earnings of $80.54 billion, the tech giant cannot afford the fine.
Domestic Limitations on Claims
The penalties imposed by the Russian government may only hold validity within Russia. Reports indicate that Google has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the situation.
