Construction to Begin in 2025
RWE has officially received the final offshore construction permit from the Danish Energy Agency for its Thor offshore wind farm. With this approval, the 1.1GW wind farm will move forward as planned. The project will feature 72 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD turbines, designed with CO2-reduced steel towers and recyclable rotor blades. Once completed, the facility will supply electricity to over one million Danish households.
Project Details and Sustainable Features
Set 22 km off the west coast of Jutland, Thor will begin with seabed preparations in early 2025. The turbine installation will start in 2026, with full operation expected by 2027. The turbines’ recyclable blades and CO2-reduced steel towers will contribute to Denmark’s renewable energy transition and sustainability goals.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The port of Thorsminde will serve as the operations base for ongoing maintenance, creating 50-60 local jobs. Additionally, the port of Esbjerg will handle the turbine installations. The wind farm will boost Denmark’s economy while supporting global renewable energy expansion.
RWE’s Renewable Energy Growth
RWE continues to expand its renewable energy footprint. The company has also secured a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Rivian for clean energy from its 127MW Champion wind project in Texas. This partnership highlights RWE’s commitment to clean energy innovation worldwide.
