SSAB, Sweden’s top steel producer, has partnered with Stena Metall to secure a steady supply of recycled scrap metal for its new electric arc furnace (EAF) mill in Oxelösund. This partnership is key to SSAB’s shift to fossil-free steel production. The company aims to reduce carbon emissions while boosting Sweden’s recycling capabilities.
Sustainable Supply and CO2 Reduction
The deal ensures that more of Sweden’s recycled steel stays local. This helps reduce the environmental impact of steel production. SSAB’s new EAF mill will use recycled scrap metal and fossil-free sponge iron (HBI). This combination will cut Sweden’s steel sector CO2 emissions by 3%. Scrap deliveries are set to start in 2026, with rail transport further lowering emissions.
Green Steel Transformation: Oxelösund as a Pilot Project
Oxelösund will be the first SSAB mill to convert from blast furnace technology to EAF production. This change marks a major milestone in SSAB’s green steel transition. The conversion will allow SSAB to produce nearly carbon-free steel. The company plans to expand this process to its other Nordic mills. Additionally, SSAB aims to increase the production of premium steel for automotive and industrial sectors.
Long-Term Partnership with Stena Metall
The collaboration with Stena Metall strengthens SSAB’s circular economy vision. Together, they explore ways to recycle materials for both SSAB and other Swedish companies. This partnership supports SSAB’s goal of creating a more sustainable steel production model.
