Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI), a leading recycled-content steelmaker based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership (GPP). This collaboration underscores SDI’s dedication to sustainability and renewable energy. In its inaugural year as a GPP member, SDI achieved a notable ranking, placing No. 21 among Fortune 500 companies and 33rd on the national Top 100 list of green power users compiled by the EPA.

In 2023, SDI’s electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills utilized an impressive 690 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of green power, accounting for 10 percent of the electricity required for steel mill operations. This achievement allowed the company to meet its renewable energy goal for 2025 two years early, demonstrating its commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

Sustainability and Emission Reduction Goals

Jeff Hansen, SDI’s vice president of environmental sustainability, emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, “By making the choice to use renewable power in our energy mix, we are reducing our emissions footprint while supporting the growth of the renewable power market.” The GPP program director, James Critchfield, highlighted that the ranking reflects how effective business practices can lead to positive environmental impacts. He praised the organizations in the Top Partner Rankings for their dedication to expanding green power usage.

Largest Renewable Purchase Agreement in North America

Last year, SDI made headlines by signing what it claims is the largest renewable product purchase agreement for the steel industry in North America. This agreement corresponds to approximately 15 percent of the electricity usage at its steel mills. The wind energy supplier involved in this agreement is set to commence commercial operations in the first quarter of 2024. This strategic move represents a significant step in increasing SDI’s reliance on renewable energy sources.

Reducing Carbon Footprint Through Recycled Materials

The large volume of recycled materials utilized by EAF producers, including SDI, has enabled them to maintain a smaller carbon emissions footprint compared to traditional steel production methods. In line with their sustainability objectives, EAF producers across North America are actively pursuing the use of wind, solar, and other non-fossil fuel energy sources. SDI has set an ambitious target to achieve 30 percent renewable energy usage by 2030, reinforcing its leadership in producing lower-carbon, high-quality steel products. The company is committed to playing a crucial role in ongoing decarbonization efforts within the industry.
