To Secure Supply, US DoD Invests in Domestic Niobium Production

us-dod

The US Department of Defense (DoD) is investing $26.4 million to bolster domestic niobium production, essential for defense and aerospace.

This grant to Global Advanced Metals (GAM) aims to enhance high-purity niobium oxide production in Pennsylvania, reducing reliance on Brazilian imports. Niobium’s lightweight and high-strength properties make it crucial for aerospace applications, particularly as the US faces competition from China in hypersonic weapon development. The DoD is also funding initiatives to improve cost-efficiency in niobium materials, reinforcing the US supply chain and supporting future defense capabilities.
