Trump Orders Review of Offshore Wind Energy on the Outer Continental Shelf
In his second term, US President Donald Trump has suspended all new offshore wind leasing on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The directive halts new leasing agreements and renewals while keeping existing leases active. The administration aims to assess the environmental and economic impacts of offshore wind projects before approving further expansion.
This decision signals a shift in US energy policy, prioritizing a detailed evaluation of offshore wind development.
Impact of the Suspension and Review Process
The Department of the Interior (DoI) will collaborate with federal agencies to evaluate offshore wind projects. The review will assess impacts on marine ecosystems, energy costs, navigational safety, and the fishing industry. Additionally, it will analyze abandoned wind turbines and their effect on local communities.
While the suspension affects new leasing, existing projects by Ørsted, Avangrid, and Dominion Energy remain active. However, officials will review these leases to determine if modifications or terminations are needed. The Lava Ridge wind project in Idaho is also on hold, pending further analysis.
Renewable energy advocates argue that offshore wind is essential for the US clean energy transition. However, the leasing suspension will stay in effect until the president takes further action.
