Concerns Over US Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement

With Donald Trump’s re-election, climate experts fear the US may withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement again. This move could severely impact global climate progress. Trump’s previous exit in 2017 already set back efforts, and his continued support for fossil fuels raises new concerns. As COP29 talks in Baku approach, climate activists worry that the US’s departure would hinder worldwide climate efforts.

EU Must Lead in Climate Action

Trump’s victory speech reaffirmed his stance on fossil fuels. He emphasized the US’s large reserves of oil and gas and signaled a likely withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. This shift places more pressure on the European Union to lead global climate efforts. Experts suggest that the EU should focus on pushing for greater emissions reductions and climate resilience. Laurence Tubiana, a key architect of the Paris Agreement, warned that without the US, the global transition to green energy could falter. However, the growing economic advantages of clean energy may keep momentum going.

The EU is expected to step in, with key figures like Chiara Martinelli urging Europe to lead ambitious financial goals for climate action. Europe’s role becomes even more critical, especially in ensuring vulnerable countries in the Global South receive adequate support. However, with the US absent from talks, China and India might feel less compelled to take significant climate action.

The Challenges Ahead for Global Climate Policy

Trump’s first withdrawal from the Paris Agreement had a symbolic impact, but it also disrupted global negotiations. Many US organizations continued to push for climate action despite Trump’s policies. However, experts like Patrick ten Brink believe that under Trump’s leadership, the US could remain stuck in “denial and deregulation,” blocking global progress.

In light of rising climate disasters in the US, advocates like Mary Robinson remain hopeful. She hopes that the growing economic and environmental toll will lead Trump to reconsider his climate stance. This could reopen the door for the US to return to global climate discussions.
