In March 2025, Turkish steel enterprises increased steel production by 7% compared to the previous month, reaching 3.13 million tons. However, the figure marked a 2.8% decrease compared to March 2024. This growth in March followed a near-annual low in the country’s steel production, according to data from the Global Steel Association (WorldSteel).
Pig Iron Production Increases in March 2025
Pig iron production in Turkey also saw a notable increase of 16.9% month-over-month in March, reaching 837 thousand tons. While this figure was the highest since October 2024, it still represented a decrease of 4.9% year-on-year.
Turkey’s Steel Industry Performance in 2025
Despite a 7% month-on-month increase in March, Turkey’s steel industry faced a slight decline in the first quarter of 2025. In the January-March period, steel production decreased by 3.4% year-on-year, totaling 9.26 million tons. Similarly, pig iron production for this period fell by 11.8% compared to 2024.
2024 Steel Production Growth
In 2024, Turkish steel production showed a positive trend, increasing by 9.4% compared to 2023, reaching 36.89 million tons. Additionally, pig iron production rose by 17.2% year-on-year to 10.19 million tons. These figures reflect a significant recovery in Turkey’s steel sector, after two years of stagnation.
Key Factors Behind Steel Growth in Turkey
This growth was largely driven by infrastructure development, especially recovery efforts in earthquake-affected regions. The expansion of export markets and the modernization of Turkey’s metallurgical facilities also contributed to the positive performance. However, global challenges, such as fluctuating demand and intense competition from Asian producers, continued to impact the sector.
Outlook for Turkey’s Steel Industry in 2025
The WorldSteel association projects a 1.7% decline in steel demand in Turkey in 2025, with production expected to drop to 35.5 million tons. This follows a more modest decline of 5.5% in 2024, with steel demand anticipated to have been 36 million tons.
