Vanguard Renewables Launches Groundbreaking Renewable Gas Facility in Virginia

Vanguard Renewables Renewable Gas Facility

Project Overview: Vanguard Leads Renewable Gas Initiative Vanguard Renewables has officially broken ground on its latest organics-to-renewable natural gas project at the historic Oakmulgee Dairy Farm in Amelia Court House, Virginia. The dairy, owned by fourth-generation farmer Larkin Moyer and his family, is notable for being the oldest continuously operating family dairy in the state.

Innovative Technology and Environmental Impact The Farm Powered anaerobic digester will convert over 105,000 tons of food and beverage waste into renewable gas, producing more than 259,000 MMBtu per year. This facility represents a significant stride in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and repurposing methane from dairy cow manure and inedible food waste. Neil H. Smith, CEO of Vanguard Renewables, emphasized the project’s role in fostering sustainable energy solutions while benefiting local communities.

Partnerships Driving Growth This project is part of a joint venture between Vanguard Renewables and TotalEnergies, aimed at expanding renewable natural gas projects across the U.S. Doug Vaccari, Managing Director of Global Infrastructure Partners, praised Vanguard’s growth momentum and its impact on the local economy, particularly highlighting the partnership with the Moyer family.

Supporting Sustainable Practices Larkin Moyer expressed his commitment to sustainable farming practices, noting that the dairy already utilizes a solar array to power its operations. This collaboration exemplifies the potential of cross-industry partnerships to drive positive environmental changes. The renewable gas produced will be utilized by AstraZeneca to decarbonize its biopharmaceutical production facilities.

Long-Term Vision for Dairy Farming Vanguard Renewables aims to support multi-generational dairy farms through its anaerobic digestion systems, providing a consistent income stream while enhancing the sustainability of agricultural practices. The digestate byproduct will be returned to the farm as a low-carbon biofertilizer, completing a circular economy model.

Conclusion: A Step Toward Net-Zero Goals With this facility, Vanguard Renewables reinforces its commitment to decarbonization and sustainable agriculture, contributing to a greener future through innovative waste management solutions.
