Vanguard Renewables Renewable Gas Facility

Vanguard Launches Renewable Gas Project at Oakmulgee Dairy Farm

The company Vanguard Renewables has officially launched a renewable gas project at Oakmulgee Dairy Farm in Virginia. This historic farm, managed by fourth-generation farmer Larkin Moyer, is the longest-running family dairy in Virginia. Notably, the project will convert food waste into renewable gas, supporting sustainability, and advancing clean energy goals across the state.

Anaerobic Digester Converts Waste into Renewable Energy

At the heart of the project is an advanced anaerobic digester, designed to process 105,000 tons of food and beverage waste annually. As a result, it will generate more than 259,000 MMBtu of renewable gas each year, substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The process repurposes methane from both dairy manure and food waste, thereby improving waste management systems and contributing to sustainable energy production.

Partnerships Driving Growth in Renewable Gas Projects

In partnership with TotalEnergies, Vanguard Renewables aims to expand renewable natural gas projects across the U.S. This collaboration plays a crucial role in accelerating the transition to clean energy solutions. Additionally, Doug Vaccari of Global Infrastructure Partners commended the project for its significant positive impact on the local community and its contributions to the overall growth of sustainable energy initiatives.

Sustainable Practices at Oakmulgee Dairy and Broader Impact

Larkin Moyer, deeply committed to sustainable farming, highlighted the farm’s existing solar array as an eco-friendly part of the operation. This partnership with Vanguard exemplifies how cross-industry collaborations can lead to impactful environmental change. Moreover, the renewable gas produced will assist companies like AstraZeneca in reducing their carbon footprint in biopharmaceutical production, marking an important milestone for global sustainability.

Supporting Multi-Generational Farms and Circular Economy

Vanguard Renewables’ anaerobic digestion systems offer reliable income streams for multi-generational farms, enhancing long-term sustainability. Notably, the digestate byproduct will be returned to Oakmulgee Dairy as a low-carbon biofertilizer, completing a circular economy model. This approach helps improve soil quality while promoting environmentally conscious farming practices that benefit both the local agricultural industry and the broader environment.
